How to prevent BBQ fire and gas bottle explosions
There’s nothing better than firing up the family BBQ for dinner. The only problem is, that if you don’t use your BBQ very often, there are a couple of safety measures you may want to run through from time to time. This will eradicate the possibility of an unwanted gas bottle explosion or a BBQ fire in your backyard.
First, you should always check your gas bottle for leaks. This can be done using the soapy water test. You should do this test not only if you can smell gas, but every time you connect a new gas bottle. It’s better to be safe than sorry. The way to go about this is to apply the soapy water with a paintbrush, or basting brush or you can sponge it on. If there is a leak in your gas bottle, bubbles will form and you may also smell the gas. You need to test the entire assembly from the gas bottle valve to where the gas hose attaches to the BBQ.
Another good tip for avoiding a BBQ fire or gas bottle explosion is to make sure you regularly inspect the hose for cracks and other degradation. Typical signs of a damaged hose on a gas bottle include:
- Slippage on the hose fitting
- Cracking, cutting, or any exposure of reinforcements
- Stiffness, hardness, heat cracks, and damage or a charred hose
- Corroded or cracked fittings
- Leaks around the fitting and through the hose
- Twisted, flattened, crushed, or severely kinked hose
- Soft, degraded, blistered, or a very loose cover
We outline the best way to ensure your gas bottle stays in top condition below:
- Regularly replace the hose and regulator assembly every 5 years
- Always keep gas bottles upright to help ensure the proper operation of the pressure relief valve
- Check the gas bottle valve assembly for leaks before transporting a gas bottle in a vehicle
- Buy your gas bottles from a reputable gas bottle service station
If you purchase your LP gas from a reputable gas bottle service station, and you regularly check your gas bottle over for cracks or leaks, the reality is that LPG gas cylinders rarely explode. So you really shouldn’t have all that much to worry about. But, if you are concerned, make sure you stop by and see the team at Peninsula Gas and Fuel.
