How Safe Is Your Gas BBQ? Our Top Tips For BBQ Gas Cylinder Safety

It’s no secret that Aussies love a BBQ; and with people entertaining at home more than ever, it’s essential that you understand the basics of BBQ gas bottle safety. Peninsula Gas & Fuel are your local LPG gas experts, offering BBQ gas bottle refill services at our Rosebud service station.

In this blog, we share some of our helpful tips to make sure your next BBQ is a safe one.

1. Check Your Gas Hose & Regulators

Fires can start if your hose has a leak, so it’s important to check your gas hose and regulators before you fire up your BBQ. We suggest spraying your fittings and hose with a bottle of soapy water. If you see bubbles start to appear, you need to replace your hose immediately as you have a leak.

If you’re unsure that your gas bottle is safe, just bring your LPG cylinder into Peninsula Gas & Fuel and our team will check it for you.

2. Store Your Gas Bottles Correctly

When it comes to storing your BBQ gas bottles, there’s a few things you should always do to make sure your gas cylinder stays safe. Cylinders should be stored outside in a well-ventilated area, far away from aerosols or flammable liquids. Gas bottles should never be stored near an ignition source. Make sure your gas bottle valves are tightly turn off when your cylinder is in storage.

And if you’re transporting your cylinder, keep it secured in an upright position away from heat and direct sunlight.

3. BBQ Safety Tips

There are several things you should do to make sure your BBQ is as safe as possible. We know a few customers who have been caught with a gas bottle fire – and we don’t want this happening to you!

Here’s some simple tips to consider at your next BBQ:

  • Don’t cook with LPG gas indoors or in a poorly ventilated area
  • Keep décor (umbrellas, hanging baskets, towels) away from your grill
