Gas bottle storage: How to safely store gas bottles at home and in the workplace

If your business uses or stores gas or LPG bottles you have a legal obligation to ensure they are safely stored in your workplace, minimizing the risk of injury or death caused by a potential leak or fire. Regardless of whether stored gas bottles are empty or full, you must have a safety plan in place.

Read through the below safety checklist:

  • Store gas bottles upright at all times. This ensures residual liquefied gas cannot contact the cylinder valves.
  • Secure gas bottles by a chain or rack so they don’t fall over.
  • Keep gas bottles in a well-ventilated area (preferably in a cage outside) to reduce the risks associated with leakage.
  • Ensure gas bottles are away from radiant heat or anything that could cause a fire.
  • Make sure gas bottles are segregated so volatile and incompatible gases are not stored together.
  • Label and tag gas bottles in the workplace so staff and contractors know exactly what’s inside and can see that it’s been tested as ‘safe to use”.

Do you keep a gas bottle at home? These tips will keep you safe

Accidents do happen, and not everyone is aware of all the different factors that need to be taken into consideration when storing a gas bottle in the home. The first thing you need to remember is to keep a naked flame away from any type of gas bottle. If you suspect a leak, think twice before using a lighter to inspect the area. It’s one of the most common mistakes people make, and if there is indeed a leak and it is big enough, using a lighter can result in a fire.

Proper gas bottle storage around your home is paramount. Whether the gas bottle is connected or stored, there are some important factors to consider:

  • Gas bottles should still be placed in a well-ventilated location and not exposed directly to the sun or other heat sources.
  • Gas bottles should never be placed near an electrical socket or flammable substance.
  • Gas bottles should be placed vertically on a firm and level surface, ensuring good access to the cylinders, valves, and regulators.
  • When storing gas bottles outside, remember to place them in a cabinet that has wire mesh at the bottom. If there is a leak, this will allow LP gas to escape into the air.
